About the Show
As night falls over Chongqing, the skies above the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers come alive with a breathtaking display of light and technology. The “New Rhythm Chongqing” Drone Light Show has become one of the city’s most dazzling cultural attractions since its debut in April 2025.
The performance is a fusion of Chongqing’s unique mountain-city landscape and cutting-edge drone technology. Thousands of drones take to the sky in synchronized formation, creating vivid, moving images that reflect the city’s identity—from the resilient banyan tree and blooming camellia (the city flower) to the playful Yangtze finless porpoises and scenes inspired by classical poetry. Each show tells a story of Chongqing’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern urban energy.
Since its launch, the show has been performed over 70 times, attracting millions of on-site visitors and earning widespread attention for its scale and creativity.
Performance Location
Flight Area: Low-altitude airspace over the core area where the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers meet (known as “Two Rivers and Four Banks”)
Launch Site: Danzishi Square in Nan’an District / the plaza outside Chongqing Planning Exhibition Gallery
Drones take off from the waterfront area along Nanbin Road near Danzishi. Once airborne, they form their spectacular patterns in the open skies above the river junction. Excellent viewing spots can be found in three main areas: Chaotianmen (Yuzhong District), Jiangbeizui (Jiangbei District), and Nanbin Road (Nan’an District).
Performance Schedule
The drone light show runs every Saturday, as well as during major holidays such as Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), Labor Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day. Around 90 performances are expected throughout the year.
Start times vary by season
May 1 – September 30: Shows begin at 9:00 PM
October 1 – April 30: Shows begin at 8:30 PM
Each performance lasts approximately 15–20 minutes. In case of rain, strong winds, or other adverse weather, the show may be canceled on short notice. It’s a good idea to check local announcements before heading out.
Best Viewing Spots & How to Get There
All viewing areas are free and open to the public. The three main viewing locations each offer a different perspective.
Nanbin Road, Nan’an District – Best for Front-Facing Views
This area is closest to the drone launch site, offering the clearest front-facing view of the patterns. It is the most popular spot and tends to be the most crowded.
Location & How to Get There:
- Near Chongqing Planning Exhibition Gallery (Danzishi Square). Take Rail Transit Loop Line to Tushan Station, Exit 1. Walk about 29 minutes.
- Raffles City (Changjiahui Shopping Park) area Take Loop Line to Danzishi Station, Exit 2. Walk about 22 minutes.
- Along Nanbin Road (both sides of the exhibition hall) Walk to an open spot along the riverside promenade.
Chaotianmen, Yuzhong District – Best for Panoramic River Views
Located at the tip of the peninsula where the two rivers meet, this area offers an expansive, dramatic view. One thing to note: text patterns will appear reversed from this angle (readable from the Nanbin side).
Location & How to Get There
- Chaotianmen Square Take Rail Transit Line 1 to Chaotianmen Station.
- Raffles City Shopping Mall / Exploration Deck Same station; exit directly into the mall area.
Jiangbeizui, Jiangbei District – A Quieter Option
This side offers a side-angle view of the performance. It’s generally less crowded than Nanbin Road, making it a good choice for those who prefer a more relaxed experience.
Location & How to Get There
- Viewing platform in front of Chongqing Grand Theatre Take Rail Transit Line 6 to Dajuyuan (Grand Theatre) Station, Exit 3-1.
- Jiangbeizui Riverside Park Same station and exit; walk toward the river.
- Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge (north end) Take the elevator at the north end of the bridge; or take Line 6 to Jiangbeicheng Station, Exit 3, and walk about 23 minutes.
Practical Tips
- Free admission: No tickets are required for any viewing area.
- Arrive early: Core viewing spots start filling up 1–2 hours before the show. Plan to arrive early to secure a good spot.
- Use public transport: Temporary traffic controls are enforced during performances. Driving near the viewing areas is not recommended. The metro system is the most reliable option.
- Follow safety instructions: Uniformed staff and volunteers will be present to help manage crowds. Please follow their guidance, especially during entry and exit.
- No drones: The airspace over the performance area and the surrounding districts (including the Chongqing Grand Theatre, Chaotianmen Square, Raffles City, Changjiahui, and the Planning Exhibition Gallery) is strictly off-limits to private drones. Unauthorized flights are prohibited.
- Weather can affect the show: The performance may be postponed or canceled if conditions are rainy or windy. Before heading out, you can check for real-time updates on local social media accounts or the “Chongqing Fabu” news platform. A quick search for “Chongqing drone show” on a local information app will also show the latest status.
- Plan your evening: The area around Nanbin Road, Changjiahui Shopping Park, and Chaotianmen has plenty of restaurants and cafes. Many visitors combine the show with dinner or a riverside walk before the performance.
