Treasure Gallery (Hall of Gems)

Why visit here?

If the Forbidden City’s grand palaces reveal the emperor’s public power, the Treasure Gallery reveals his private wealth. Here, the objects aren’t just precious—they are personal. From a golden pagoda holding a lock of his mother’s hair to a 5-ton jade mountain depicting a legendary flood control hero, this collection humanizes the dynasty. It is the single most dazzling place in the Forbidden City and an absolute must-see for any traveler seeking depth and wonder.

The Treasure Gallery (Hall of Gems), located in the eastern Ningshou Gong district, opened in 1958. It is the Palace Museum’s premier exhibition of Qing Dynasty imperial treasures. Featuring over 400 objects - from ritual gold ware and court regalia to bejeweled decorative items - this permanent collection showcases the pinnacle of Chinese craftsmanship. Your ¥10 ticket also grants access to the stunning Qianlong Garden (Ningshou Gong Garden), the emperor’s personal retirement retreat.

Pros & Cons

  • Five-ton “Yu the Great” Jade Boulder: The largest jade carving in China, this 5,000kg green boulder from Hotan took a decade to create and depicts the legendary flood control hero guiding ancient laborers.
  • Qianlong’s 16-Piece Golden Chime Set: Weighing 460kg, these pure gold bells were once played for the emperor’s most sacred rituals, producing a tone of pure power.
  • Golden Hair Pagoda & “Jin Ou Yong Gu” Cup: One contains a lock of the Qianlong Emperor's mother’s hair; the other was the emperor’s personal New Year’s wine cup, symbolizing the dynasty’s eternal stability.
  • Qianlong Garden (Included): Your ticket covers this private “secret garden” of four courtyards, with intricate architecture, rockeries, and the only surviving golden-roofed wooden pavilion in the Forbidden City.
  • Mandatory Advanced Booking: Tickets are not sold on site. You must reserve your entry online via the official “Palace Museum” WeChat mini-program or website up to 7 days in advance.
  • Separate from Main Ticket: The ¥10 is an add-on to your main Palace Museum entry fee (¥40-60). Both must be booked together for the same day.
  • Monday Closures: The entire Palace Museum is closed on Mondays (except national holidays), including the Treasure Gallery and Qianlong Garden.
