Meijiawu is much more than a tea village; it is a place where nature and history intertwine. Surrounded by green Longjing tea terraces and bamboo forests, this community at the foot of West Lake offers a rural escape where the aroma of freshly harvested tea permeates every trail.

At the heart of the village is the Premier Zhou Enlai Memorial Hall. This late Qing Dynasty wooden building, in the siheyuan style, was where Zhou Enlai met with villagers during his five visits between 1957 and 1963, establishing his point of contact for rural work nationwide.

The interior of the hall retains the atmosphere of those meetings. A large oil painting recreates the meetings with the peasants, and among the objects on display is the first electric stove for roasting tea, developed thanks to a suggestion from the Prime Minister himself. Historical photos show Zhou Enlai accompanying foreign leaders such as Voroshilov, always sharing a cup of tea with his guests.

Today, Meijiawu combines its centuries-old tradition with a vocation for tourism. Strolling through its narrow streets, sipping a cup of Longjing in the local teahouses, and visiting this corner of historical memory allows travelers to connect with the most authentic essence of Hangzhou: the one that unites the excellence of its tea with the indelible mark of those who made this land great.

Pros & Cons

  • One of the primary growing areas for premium Longjing tea – with over 800,000㎡ of tea terraces, Meijiawu is a designated Grade-A conservation area for West Lake Longjing.
  • Hands‑on tea experiences (picking, stir‑frying and tasting) – available in over 160 village teahouses, especially during the March to May harvest season.
  • Premier hiking access to Shili Langdang Ridge
  • No advance ticket is required, but the tea‑picking workshops need booking – the village itself is free to enter, and tickets are only needed for specific paid activities.
  • Weekends and public holidays get very crowded
  • Some teahouses near the main road are more expensive than the small family‑run ones – for better value, walk 10 minutes deeper into the village and compare prices before settling in.
