Why visit here?
Visit Nanxun, the most refined water town. Stately mansions, gardens, and a thousand-year-old library tell the story of the glory of the silk merchants.
Nanxun, with more than 750 years of history, is the most refined and least crowded of the water towns south of the Yangtze River. Unlike its neighbors, its fame lies not only in its canals and bridges, but also in the luxurious mansions built by silk merchants at the end of the Qing dynasty.
The Zhang Shiming Mansion is the best example of this unique fusion. Its traditional Chinese façade conceals a European-style ballroom with French tile floors, crystal chandeliers, and Venetian mirrors. The merchants of Nanxun, who enriched the maritime routes with their silk, wanted to bring the fashions of the world they had known to their homeland.
The Small Lotus Garden, built in 1885, is a haven of serenity. Its central pond, covered with water lilies in summer, reflects classical pavilions where poets composed verses while watching golden carp. The nearby Jiaye Library, with its 160,000 ancient volumes, bears witness to these merchants' passion for culture and knowledge.
The canals of Nanxun, less traveled than those of Wuzhen or Zhouzhuang, preserve the authenticity of everyday life. Women wash vegetables on stone steps, elderly men play chess under willow trees, and perfectly arched bridges hold the secret of a China that mass tourism has yet to discover.
Pros & Cons
- Uniquely blends traditional Chinese architecture with Western styles – see French Romanesque villas and red‑brick Baroque buildings (e.g., Zhang Shimin’s Former Residence, Liu’s Mansion) rarely found elsewhere.
- Experience real local life along the 400‑meter Baijianlou (Hundred Houses) – a row of original residential houses directly facing the canal, reflecting a quiet, lived‑in atmosphere.
- Can enter the main town area for free – only pay for the individual heritage sites you wish to visit (adult combo ticket approx. 95 RMB).
- Very accessible from Shanghai and Hangzhou
- Large parts of the heritage sites have been reconstructed in recent decades – though well‑maintained, the authenticity is lower than more remote, less‑visited water towns.
- Cobblestone paths can become slippery when wet
- Can get crowded on Chinese public holidays
