Why visit here?
Discover China's greatest archaeological treasure. Tang dynasty frescoes, gold coins, and the legendary Hejiacun find. 1.7 million artifacts recount 13 dynasties of splendor.
The Shaanxi History Museum is considered the largest showcase of ancient Chinese civilization. Opened in 1991 with a design reminiscent of Tang Dynasty architecture, it houses more than 1.7 million cultural relics spanning from the Paleolithic era to the Qing Dynasty.
The museum's collection is particularly rich in objects from the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties, which had their capitals in the Shaanxi region. Ritual bronze pieces, life-size terracotta warriors, gold and silver mirrors, and monumental frescoes from imperial tombs tell a visual story of the grandeur of ancient China.
The Hejiacun Treasure, discovered in 1970, is one of its biggest attractions. More than a thousand gold and silver objects, coins from distant dynasties, and jewels from the Silk Road were found hidden in two huge terracotta jars. No one knows who buried them or why they never returned to retrieve them.
Nine of the pieces are classified as “prohibited export relics,” national treasures that can never leave China. Among them are a jade cup carved in the shape of a mythological animal and a gold and silver incense burner with rotating mechanisms that still amaze today with their technical sophistication.
