Wuzhen
Why visit here?
Wuzhen, with its 1,300 years of history, is the most famous of the water towns south of the Yangtze River. Divided into six districts, its canals wind between wooden houses and stone bridges that have inspired poets for centuries. Together with Zhouzhuang, it is the icon of the “Venice of the East.”
The heart of the town beats in the Xizha district, the largest and best preserved. Its cobbled streets are home to more than 30 centuries-old bridges connecting the banks. Silk workshops, printed fabric dyeing workshops, and old tea houses keep alive the traditions that made this region famous.
The water theater is its most unique spectacle. On a floating stage in the middle of the canal, traditional opera actors perform pieces while boats stop to listen. At nightfall, thousands of red lanterns are reflected in the water, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
Nighttime in Wuzhen is an experience apart. The streets empty of daytime visitors and the silence is broken only by the splashing of the poles of the last barges. In the small museums, the carved wood of windows and bridal beds tells stories of love and craftsmanship that the water has kept for millennia.

- Extremely crowded during Chinese public holidays – peak days can see 60,000–70,000 visitors in Xizha alone. Visit on weekdays or off-season for a quieter experience.
- Cobblestone paths are tough on rolling luggage. Pack light or arrange luggage storage before entering.
- Some museums and attractions close temporarily for maintenance
