Why visit here?
Stroll through picturesque Xiaohe Zhijie. Its centuries-old houses, artisan workshops, and bohemian atmosphere transport you to traditional, authentic Hangzhou.
Xiaohe Zhijie (Little River Street) is a historic neighborhood located at the confluence of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal with the Xiaohe and Yuhangtang rivers. Dating back to the Song dynasty, this 300-meter enclave preserves the urban layout that flourished during the Republic of China as a bustling center of river trade.
Its architecture maintains the typical “one street, one river” layout with two-story wooden houses that combine business on the ground floor and living quarters above. The 2008 renovation respected the original facades while modernizing the interiors, allowing many residents to return to their century-old homes.
Strolling along its cobblestones, you will discover the old Fangzengchang Sauce Factory, with more than a century of history, where traditional fermented foods are still made. Small craft workshops, calligraphy studios, and cozy cafes coexist with neighbors hanging their laundry in the windows.
The “Dangdang'er” boat trip allows you to explore the canal in small boats decorated with lanterns, enjoying a unique perspective of the neighborhood. At dusk, the lights reflect on the water, creating the most authentic and peaceful atmosphere of traditional Hangzhou.
Pros & Cons
- Free entry, open 24/7. Located at the Grand Canal’s confluence, this “one river, two streets” neighborhood has preserved over half of its original residents, making it a living community, not a stage set.
- A slow-paced, photo‑friendly pocket of Hangzhou. Quirky teahouses, ceramic studios, indie cafés, and flower shops are tucked behind artfully decorated doors.
- Lantern‑lit evening walks are especially magical.
- Although the street is free, a real‑name online reservation is currently required for entry.
- Cobblestone paths become slippery when wet.
