Xitang, with more than a thousand years of history, is the only water town south of the Yangtze River that has long covered walkways. More than 1,300 meters of roofed galleries protect its streets from rain and sun, creating an intimate labyrinth where neighbors chat and travelers wander leisurely.

The village unfolds over nine rivers connected by more than a hundred bridges. The most famous, the Kissing Bridge, is a meeting place for lovers who believe that crossing it together ensures eternal love. Under the eaves, century-old shops sell bamboo shoots in vinegar and small crayfish, specialties that the locals fish for every morning.

The House of Dreams, also known as the Ten Scenes Inn, is a jewel of popular architecture. Its windows frame ten different views of the village: a distant bridge, a bend in the canal, the roof of a pagoda. Each room is a visual poem that changes with the light of day.

At dusk, thousands of red lanterns light up, reflecting on the water. Wooden barges with paper lanterns slowly ply the canals while visitors sip jasmine tea on the terraces. It is then that Xitang reveals its best-kept secret: the silence that dwells under the centuries-old roofs, where time flows like water, slowly but surely.

Pros & Cons

  • Filming location of Mission: Impossible III – Hollywood chose Xitang for its dramatic narrow alleys and canals. You can stand exactly where Tom Cruise filmed.
  • Unique narrowest lane (Shipi Alley) only 0.8m wide – a thrilling walk through a single-person stone lane with 216 thin slabs, where you can touch century-old brick walls.
  • A daytime ticket lets you enter 11 small attractions, including Xiyuan Garden, the Chinese Button Museum and the Shadow Puppet Museum
  • Cobblestone paths become slippery when wet
  • Narrow alleys get jam-packed on weekends and holidays
  • Boat rides are not included in the entrance fee
  • English signage is limited and deep cultural context requires a guide
